- Can I have a fire door assembly inspection carried out without a report?
- Yes, but the report is part of the documentary evidence that proves you have done your duty of care, what standard of inspection was carried out, what items of concern were found. It should be kept in the door assembly register within the building register. It would also be difficult to produce a plan of action to make repairs, maintenance or upgrades to the assemblies inspected.
- Can I wedge open a fire door when the building is occupied?
- No, All fire doors should have free swing and should automatically fully close on to the stop when not in use. If you require a fire door to be held open there are specific products in the market that will hold a door open until the fire alarm activates. It will then release the door to allow it to fully close.
- Can I fit any door closer to a fire door?
- No. Only fire rated door closers should be fitted to fire doors. The rating documentation should be kept within the door register.
- Do I require labels on fire doors?
- Yes. They should read “Fire Door Keep Closed”. If the door has a hold open device it should read “Fire Door Keep Clear”.
- Can I have my Facility management company carry out an inspection and produce a report?
- Yes but, Generally. A facility management company is there to maintain a building to ensure that it meets legal requirements and health and safety standards also that there is a safe working environment for employees. Part of that would be to maintain the fire door assemblies to the correct fire standards. The report is part of your evidence in an investigation. You will have to consider whether the report is bias or non-bias. An investigation may raise the question. It would be advisable to have an independent report produced which would be non-bias.
